Help us deliver exceptional care
At Frimley Park we want to provide the best possible services to patients in the best possible environment. Often this means raising money through our charitable fund for things like equipment or new technologies over and above that which the NHS would normally provide.
We have been very fortunate to receive fantastic support from the local community for past appeals with members of the public going to extraordinary lengths to raise money for the trust's charitable funds. Our grateful thanks go to each and every one of our fundraisers.
We are currently raising money for a new and larger family centred special care baby unit (SCBU) - read on for more information about our Saving Tiny Lives Appeal.
Saving Tiny Lives Appeal
We want to do everything we can to support babies who are born prematurely or unwell. Year on year, the number of babies born at Frimley is increasing. So much so that we anticipate there will be 6,000 babies born at Frimley Park each year by 2013.
The increase in the number of births has meant that our current special care baby unit (SCBU) has outgrown its current premises and will be moving into a much larger space in 2012 adjacent to our maternity unit.
We wish to take this opportunity to turn our new neonatal unit into a centre of excellence for the sickest and most vulnerable newborn infants. At the same time we want to deliver a high quality family centred service and help the babies' parents to care for them in those vital first few days and weeks.
The new special care baby unit will offer a welcoming and friendly environment to parents and families along with comfortable and friendly accommodation for parents to be close to their sick child.
This is where we need your help
In order to support the care we offer these babies, we want to ensure we have cutting edge technology available so we can detect if there are any abnormalities in the babies' brains, hearts or kidneys without having to transfer them to a larger hospital and all the upheaval that inevitably brings to the families concerned.
Frimley Park Hospital's seventh annual Road Race and Fun Run event on 6 May is being held in aid of the appeal. Why not limber up and join in the fun and help us save the lives of our tiny babies.
Equipment needed for our new, larger SCBU
A cerebral function monitor
This vital piece of equipment detects brain activity and can identify if a baby is having silent seizures that are not physically visible. In so doing it helps to determine the best course of treatment and helps to prevent or reduce the risk of brain damage.
An ultrasound machine
This machine allows our clinicians to see if a baby has had a brain haemorrhage which is a complication for some premature infants. It also enables clinicians to examine a baby's kidneys.
An echo machine
Combined with an ultrasound machine, an echo machine can be used to see if a baby has a heart defect. At Frimley Park we have a consultant with the correct skills and knowledge to interpret the images from these machines so babies need not be transferred to other hospitals for this investigation.
Three more Optiflow machines
These machines are used to assist babies with breathing difficulties
Three more high dependency cots
Frimley Park Hospital's maternity service has an excellent reputation and the highest possible safety rating from CNST which underwrites maternity services in the NHS. It was also rated as the best performing hospital in London and the South East in the most recent maternity review.
