Maternity
Welcome Maternity videos
The maternity service is based at Frimley Park Hospital with a satellite antenatal clinic in Aldershot. It serves the population of west Surrey, north east Hampshire and parts of Berkshire.
Antenatal care is provided at local health centres, surgeries, children's centres, in the antenatal clinic at the hospital and sometimes at home. A named midwife will arrange to meet with you early in your pregnancy to discuss your antenatal care which will be tailored to meet your individual needs and wishes. You have a choice of lead professional and place of birth. All women have the option to see an obstetrician if they wish.
Community midwives also attend home births and visit new mothers and babies at home for up to 28 days following the birth of their child.
Frimley Park Hospital's maternity service has the highest possible safety rating from CNST which underwrites maternity services in the NHS. It was also rated as the best performing hospital in London and the south east in the most recent maternity review.
Midwifery Philosophy of Care
- We recognise that childbirth is a unique experience for the individual and that it has social and psychological effects on a woman and her family
- We believe that women as mothers are the main focus of our maternity service and that the midwife becomes a partner in care providing education, guidance and support
- We recognise that in most cases childbirth is a natural physiological event. Subsequently our approach to care enables the woman to feel in control, encouraging her to make informed choices about pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood. Where complications arise, women and their partners will be fully informed of care options and their individual preferences will be respected.
- We will promote practice that is research based and facilitates individual choice throughout the childbirth experience. The multi-disciplinary team will continually audit their care, evaluate their practice and update in light of new evidence.
- We respect the dignity, rights and cultural and religious needs of mothers, babies and their families and wish to facilitate a positive birth experience in a safe, sensitive, supporting and friendly environment
- We recognise the fundamental importance of appropriate communication and liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. We will provide an environment that encourages teaching, innovation and learning.
There are eleven consultants in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology. A consultant is on-call 24 hours a day to provide advice and support to the team of doctors based in the maternity unit.
